We live in a world where search engines and social media sites algorithmically show us what the system thinks we want to see. Every individual gets a unique search engine results page based on tons of data points.

Some of these data points include:

  • Geographic location (major factor for local SEO)
  • Interests and hobbies

  • Online behaviors

These customized results lead to what Eli Pariser refers to as “filter bubbles” in his popular TED talk.

This is an important concept to understand for SEO because it means that every individual will see a unique, customized search engine results page. For example, if you could observe a democrat and a republican both search for “Obama,” you will see dramatically different results for each individual.

There are also many metrics that are not that important in reports. The most important SEO metrics for you to follow are sales revenue, leads generated, and email addresses captured. All of the other metrics are for us digital marketing nerds to use to continue to improve your bottom line.

Interpreting SEO Data

When it comes to SEO, good data and analytics are essential. Two of my favorite metaphor’s come from Nassim Taleb’s book, The Black Swan.

The first metaphor involves a turkey. A turkey probably feels safe, secure and happy when it is fed and cared for every single day by a human. That is, until the day before Thanksgiving when the turkey is slaughtered to be eaten. This scenario shows that past data is not always a good predictor of future outcomes. This is true in SEO as well because a good SEO provider needs to be able to understand data and have a system for safe experimentation to stay on the cutting-edge of the SEO industry.

The second metaphor addresses the narratives that we create around data. If we look at each individual day of our lives, from birth until right now, we have a data set that shows us consistently being alive every single day. This data set can be used to prove two polar opposite narratives: the first is that we are immortal and the second is that we are one day closer to death. The data supports both scenarios. SEO data, or any data set for that matter, can be used as evidence to support pretty much any theory. Having an SEO professional that understands the context and the reality of both the SEO data and the SEO industry will be key to your success.

SEO Agencies Cannot Guarantee Rankings

I cannot guarantee specific results or search engine rankings because that would be dishonest and it would violate Google’s policies on SEO. What I can guarantee is that we will have exact data on how many leads, sales, and email addresses have been generated by our SEO efforts. This will allow you to determine exactly how much money you’re making from your investment in our SEO service.

It’s difficult to identify with a high degree of certainty what SEO tactic is responsible for your rankings. SEO is a mix of art and science. Hopefully this page got that point across. There are guidelines to follow but there are also exceptions to every rule. I often cite Dropbox as an example because they rank on page 1 for an extremely competitive keyword (“cloud storage”) even though their homepage doesn’t even have the keyword on the site, let alone in the title tags, alt tags, or other common on-site factors.
